• Studies Show the Way You Breathe May Influence Your Mind

    Written by Gustavo Oliveira

A study started in 1991 by Jack Feldman, professor of neurology at UCLA, and later by Mark Krasnow and Kevin Yackle showed that breathing affects the mind and its emotional states. They found a neural circuit that causes us to be anxious when we are breathing rapidly, and calm when we are breathing slowly.

With that said, what impact does the depth and rhythm of breathing have on your mind? If it does have any effect, can it help you improve your business or your job performance? The answer is, yes.

For 12 years, I have been researching, training and teaching more than 2,000 students worldwide, including high-achieving entrepreneurs, corporate executives and elite athletes on how to reach their fullest potential by developing their body and brain to perform at its peak potential.

I adopted a methodology called DeRose Method to train my students. This method encompasses a collection of more than 50 respiratory techniques that bring a powerful impact on mind’s ability to function better, in addition to an increase in energy levels of the practitioner.

    In summary, the primary impacts of proper breathing include;

    • The ability to change your immediate emotions. Changing the rhythm of the breathing can have the ability to change our immediate emotions. When you have a better control of your emotions, you can keep them in balance with rational thinking, allowing you to make better business decisions.
    • Increase in concentration and focus. When we establish a deep and well-paced breathing the instabilities of our consciousness and our mind decrease, favoring concentration and focus.
    • Increase your productivity. When you gain control over your emotions and increase your ability to focus, and you will naturally have a better business performance, due to the increase in your productivity.
    • Develop better relationships. As a result of managing your emotions better, you will have the ability to maintain professional relationships with the team, customers, and suppliers.

Therefore, training breathing techniques and applying them to your daily life will positively affect your brain activity. With practice, in time, you will acquire the ability to accelerate or slow down your breaths according to your needs. With an increased emotional intelligence, a better focus and more mental resilience you will perform better at work, realizing your potential.

  • How Emotional Intelligence Can Help You Succeed in Business

    Written by Gustavo Oliveira

Heart shape in human head. Concept of love.

Most people believe that their most significant assets are their professional experiences, certifications, and diplomas but, in reality, it is the ability to manage good human relations. Human relations are what we might call emotional intelligence (EI). A component of emotional intelligence is how we deal with situations of pressure, frustration, and stress when working with others.

Below are four powerful techniques when handling and developing your emotional intelligence:

    Study yourself.

To get a better understanding of your emotional responses, behaviors, and where your weaknesses may lie, learn to pay attention to your reactions and behaviors. Understanding exactly where you need more work can help you get ahead. If you need a better understanding of where your weakness may lie, find people in your professional or personal life who will tell you the truth, even when it’s difficult. They don’t necessarily have to be your close friend or family, but they do need to be honest and unafraid to tell you what areas in your personality you may need to work on.

Manage emotions by merely breathing correctly.

Have you noticed how a person that is under stress or is angry breathes? Very short and fast. Have you seen how a person that is focused and concentrated breathes? Deep and steady. Learn to manage your immediate emotions. To manage your immediate emotions, try breathing and exhaling slowly, by taking deep breaths through the nose, while keeping your ribcage relaxed. Also, deep, slow breathing into the belly is strong medicine for anxiety, fear, and anger. Learning how to slow down breathing is a powerful tool to help one manage emotions and cope with pressure during stressful situations.

    Channel your emotions.

A great method of handling negative emotions is to transform negative energies into positive ones by redirecting them to fuel new opportunities. In 2009 I was expanding two successful businesses. Two years later, both had failed and my money was gone. I was crushed, frustrated and disappointed, but instead of letting my emotions reinforce an unproductive mindset and behaviors, I channeled the power of frustration into something positive. I decided use my failures by teaching others from my mistakes. I created a course which was a huge success and became an amazing new asset.

    Transmute your emotions.

One powerful solution to handling negative emotions is to transform the negative energies into positive ones by directing the emotions and energies to something else. See chart below for common negative emotions that can be converted into positives ones.

A New Discipline the Helps You Live a More Fulfilling, and Productive Life

Most people are in pursuit of a more ‘satisfying’ life but many are not sure how they can live a more fulfilling, and productive life. We all want to perform our best when it matters most – in work and life, but in today’s “always on” and stress-filled world, we can feel unfocused, unenergized and drained. Everyday Americans struggle with achieving a healthy work-life balance, taming their bad habits, emotions, maximizing energy, and staying true to their values in social situations. As a result, these road blocks are limiting many to rise to their highest potential in life. As a result, many are turning to a unique practice, the DeRose Method, to help expand their energy capacity for improved performance and resilience in their lives.

    What is the DeRose Method?

The DeRose Method is a unique practice proven to help develop an individual’s brain, body and emotions, through techniques (breathing, body awareness and physical health, relaxation, concentration, meditationand concepts (mental attitude, ability to cope with pressure, behavioral and emotional management, relational skills and management, stress management and good nourishment). These skills build the solid foundation upon which one’s daily performance will thrive.

The DeRose Method is a practice that shows individuals how to maximize their outer impact in life by learning to control their brain’s ability to handle the persistent demands in their everyday lives. It also empowers one to gain emotional control and create new and/or develop healthier habits by cultivating self-discipline, maximizing energy, enhancing self-awareness in social environment, and improving their nutritional habits. While most individuals do not have 100% control over their environment, there are choices they can make daily that affect performance and productivity, relationships, health, and happiness. Some of the tools used in the DeRose Method are respiratory re-education, stress management techniques, meditation, procedures that enhance emotional tuning and mental concentration, and a physical portion that improves muscle tone and flexibility. The program also includes a nutritional portion. Each program is completely tailored and personalized to the user’s needs. The practice has already been adopted by top companies to help their leaders and employees improve in concentration, team working skills, creativity, insight, and productivity.

The DeRose Method was started by Prof. DeRose (born February 18, 1944). Prof. DeRose has authored more than thirty titles and sold over one million copies worldwide on his teachings and philosophies. With over fifty years of career experience, he has trained thousands of entrepreneurs and is recognized internationally as one of the most successful professionals in his field. A master in self-development, Prof. DeRose has been awarded numerous titles and honors from various institutions around the world, including the Medal of Peace from the United Nations Organization of Brazil in 2006. DeRose was also recognized in 2001 and 2002 with the title of Master (non-academic) and an Honorary Degree from the FATEA – Faculdades Integradas Teresa d’Ávila (Brazil), the Universidade Lusófona of Lisboa (Portugal), the Universidade do Porto (Portugal), the Universidade de Cruz Alta (Brazil), the Universidade Estácio de Sá (Brazil), the Faculdades Integradas Coração de Jesus, and the City Council of Curitiba (Brazil).

Since 1960 Prof. DeRose has taught and defended a lifestyle that values well-being, strength, power, civility and culture. In the 2007, he began to develop the DeRose Method, a system of techniques and concepts with the purpose of improving the practitioner’s level of high performance and quality of life. The DeRose Method teaches individuals how to live in high performance by pursuing brain, emotions and body mastery through techniques (breathing, body awareness and physical health, relaxation, concentration, meditation) and concepts (mental attitude, ability to cope with pressure, behavioral and emotional management, relational skills and management, stress management and good nourishment).

Today, the DeRose Method has over 20,000 members and is taught all over the world; in more than 90 locations, 11 different countries and in cities such as New York, London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires, among others. • 7 Hacks to Enhance Your Mental Performance

    Written by Gustavo Oliveira (www.brainhackers.com)

golden brain glowing inside of light bulb on paper texture background

For the past 12 years, I have been teaching top-level executives, entrepreneurs, and elite athletes on ways they can enhance their professional performance while improving their quality of life.  One of the most critical components needed to improve your professional performance starts with the ability to improve your mental performance.
The methods I use to improve mental performance derives from the DeRose Method. The DeRose Method incorporates over 2,000 techniques, so I’ve summarized seven hacks that you can start applying right now in order to begin enhancing your mental performance. To further validate the results that can be achieved by using the DeRose Method, I’d like point to a recent study conducted by the neuroscientist Dr. Renata Coura from Paris, France. Dr. Coura states that “altogether, the set of techniques and behavioral training of the Method have a strong impact on the functioning and also in the structure of the practitioner’s brain and body. This translates into general well-being, emotional self-sufficiency, awareness-raising and high-performance mental skills.” She continues “imaging studies show that poor diet, lack of physical activity and sleep, and having counterproductive thoughts, reduce the level of brain activity and hamper its functioning.”

Below are my 7 hacks for enhancing your mental performance.

    1. Learn to cultivate good relationships. This habit eliminates a lot of emotional issues and will help you focus energy and mental strength on more productive activities. Maintaining good relations can also provide you with a healthy support system.
    2. Good nutrition: Vegetables and fruits generally are richer in terms of energy and nutrients. So, a diet full of them will definitely improve brain functions.
    3. Learn to breathe properly: A study started in 1991 by Jack Feldman, professor of neurology at UCLA, showed that breathing affects the mind and its emotional states. They found a neural circuit that causes us to be anxious when we are breathing rapidly and focused when we are breathing slowly.
    4. Develop a comprehensive meditation approach: The DeRose Method combines meditation with breathing exercises, internal cleansing techniques, body techniques, relaxation, and mentalization. This approach brings a powerful focus, awareness and mental concentration ability.
    5. Maintain a positive attitude: Train your mind to see the positive angle of any situation. Whenever an adverse situation occurs, train yourself to take advantage of it somehow, rather than whining.
    6. Physical activity and sleep: Within the Method, there are body and stress management techniques which will improve physical condition, the quality of your sleep, and consequently enhance brain activity.
    7. Emotional management: A common way of dealing with our emotional aspect is through control. And control means repression of our emotions. This works for a while, but only for a while. The emotional impulse does not disappear, and eventually that repressed energy sooner or later will explode or implode, bringing unwanted consequences. The solution is to channel the emotional energy into something positive through behavior training.

  • This Practice Will Help You Break Old Habits and Live More Productively

    Written by Krista Gray (brit.co)

Ever wonder how celebs and high-performance entrepreneurs manage to be both forward-thinking dreamers and incredible doers? Us too! Since we’re always working on finding balance, eating well, and getting enough sleep to be healthy and productive, we were extra-intrigued when we heard about the DeROSE Method, an increasingly popular system said to help people de-stress and expand their energy capacity. John Chisenhall, the director at DeROSE Method Greenwich Village, recently gave us the 411.

Taught in 90+ spots around the globe, the DeROSE Method is a unique practice that helps people develop their brain, bod, and emotions. As the method was created to help people achieve a healthier and more productive lifestyle, it teaches techniques like breathing, body awareness, relaxation, concentration, and meditation. Even more, it calls on concepts like mental attitude, coping with pressure, stress management, and good nourishment to help people break old habits and build a solid foundation to thrive. “Throughout life, we accumulate old habits that might have once been (or seemed) useful, but that can fade as we transition into different stages of life,” Chisenhall explains. “Unfortunately, using the same ‘routine thinking’ can prevent you from achieving your goals.” Self-evaluation, he says, is key to making sure your behaviors, habits, and attitude are fine-tuned to help you live your best life. “You’ll expend much less energy and effort if you can change before discomfort and suffering occur.”

    1. Harness the power of mentalization. “Create a mental blueprint, an archetype, of your objective or goal — we call this the mentalization technique,” Chisenhall suggests. “Did you know that ‘mentalization’ is a synonym for imagination?” He says it’s in the moment you imagine your archetype that it starts to exist in a more subtle way; basically, as soon as you start thinking about ditching old habits and reaching new goals, your brain will start finding ways to make it happen.

“I use architecture as a clear example,” Chisenhall expands. “Before construction starts, you mentalize or envision your plan, which then gets transferred to a drawing and eventually crystallized with its construction. Most people don’t realize how mentalization can open doors of opportunity to bring their dreams to life, but don’t fool yourself into believing that mentalizing a goal once or randomly is enough — it takes a lot of practice to produce concrete results.”

    2. Reprogram your emotions in stressful situations. The DeROSE Method can help you manage your emotions in everyday situations, many of which can help you achieve success. To do this, Chisenhall offers some tips. “Think about what you want, and communicate the message to your psyche; begin with a message that is positive and real rather than trying to convince yourself about something that’s unrealistic. Next, create a mentalization associated with your message. Last, swap ‘I’m going to’ with ‘I am.’”

Chisenhall also suggests countering negative thoughts with positive ones. “When you experience something undesirable, respond with the opposite. For example, if you have a misunderstanding at work, offer a genuine smile, find common ground, and be the first one to work toward making amends. Are you feeling jealous your teammate was promoted but you weren’t? Focus on admiring the qualities that led to their promotion, and get to work on your own skills and traits.”

    3. Master your breath to create purposeful patterns. “Your breath is the only physiological activity that can be conscious or subconscious,” Chisenhall points out. “Your old habits of thought (and actions) reside in your subconscious mind. It recognizes your comfort zone and works to keep you in order to quicken response resolution and conserve physical, emotional, and brain energy. What most people don’t realize is that through breath we can access a portal to the subconscious and begin to restructure and create new patterns that better serve our purpose.”

Naturally, doing things differently can feel scary. To use your breath as a superpower when you feel stress surfacing, Chisenhall says to focus on taking long and deep breaths. “Inhale, helping your abdomen expand outward, and exhale, pulling your abdomen inward. Air in, abdomen out; air out, abdomen in.” When it comes to perfecting your breathing technique, he advises breathing in and out through your nose only. “Aim for inhaling for four seconds and exhaling for eight seconds; ideally, find a place to sit comfortably so you can pay attention to your breath.” Once you’re able to ditch the short, shallow breaths that come with being stressed out, you’re sure to feel a whole lot better.

  • Alta Performance

    “Agir, eis a inteligência verdadeira.

Experimente.
